Richardson, TX – The recently concluded 2023 DFW Youth English Speech Contest, held at the University of Texas at Dallas, brought together nearly 300 young students and parents for a day of inspiring speeches and remarkable talent. Hosted by the Chinese Institute of Engineers/USA-DFW Chapter and organized by the Texas Dragon Toastmasters Club, the event aimed to encourage public speaking skills, ignite passion, and cultivate self-assurance among the youth. With the support of esteemed sponsors including Oncor, Texas Instruments, Diodes, AT&T, PEPSICO, Cathay Bank, Cindi’s New York Deli, and the University of Texas at Dallas, the contest proved to be a resounding success.

Under the dedicated leadership of Ms. Rong Zhang and a committee of 11 chairs from the Texas Dragon Toastmasters Club, months of planning and preparation culminated in a memorable day of speeches, laughter, and applause. The contest attracted 125 students from grades 1 to 12, divided into 10 groups according to grade level. Each participant showcased their communication abilities, captivating the audience with a wide range of topics including unforgettable summer vacations, favorite hobbies, dreams, and challenges.

Guided by the expertise of Ms. Jen Hoch, a Distinguished Toastmaster who served as the chief judge, the contest ensured a fair and impartial evaluation process with the assistance of 22 trained judges. Over 100 dedicated volunteers contributed to the smooth execution of the event, offering valuable assistance and support throughout the day.

The annual speech contest serves as a powerful platform for young individuals to develop speech skills, stimulate interest in public speaking, and nurture their confidence and leadership abilities. It not only encourages self-expression but also lays the foundation for a successful future. Participants showcased their talents with impressive vocal variety, effective body language, and engaging eye contact, leaving a lasting impression on the judges, many of whom are renowned award winners in international speech contests.

A highlight of the event was the live speech demonstration by Mr. Edmund “Guapo” Adjei-Baah, the second-place winner of the 2023 International Speech Contest from District 50 of Toastmasters International. His speech titled “Just Have Patience” emphasized the importance of patience in achieving success, resonating with the enthusiastic audience. The students responded with great enthusiasm, applauding continuously and appreciating the humor woven into the speech.

During the award ceremony, the joy and jubilation were palpable as winners and their proud parents celebrated their well-deserved achievements. The organizing committee takes immense pride in providing a platform for students to cultivate their interest in public speaking and hopes that the participants will continue to grow and improve, armed with newfound confidence and valuable communication skills.

Prior to the contest, the committee organized a public speaking workshop that attracted over 80 students and parents. The workshop, held on May 27th, delved into techniques for delivering clear and logical speeches, captivating audiences with vocal variety, effectively conveying information, and emphasizing key points through gestures. The committee firmly believes that communication skills are vital for success in various aspects of life and encourages participants to apply their newfound skills to shape a prosperous future.

The 2023 DFW Youth English Speech Contest concluded on a high note, inspiring young minds, fueling their passion for public speaking, and setting them on a trajectory towards greater achievements. As the echoes of powerful speeches continue to resonate, the organizing committee and sponsors eagerly anticipate witnessing the participants’ growth and success in the years to come.
