This STEM event supports the National Discover-E Engineers Week. The SECC consists of a series of programs: two free hands-on workshops and a competition. For the past four years\, SECC has attracted huge interests from DFW 1st to 12th grade students. We are excited to announce the new theme and updated technologies this year. Hundreds of students have improved their coding and presentation skills from this event\, and you can too! Please note the important dates:\n\n\nEligibility\nStudents currently enrolled in grades 1 to 12 in fall 2021 are eligible to participate. \n\nCompetitions \nDivision-A: Code in Scratch (Grades 1-5)\n\n\n\nTheme 1\n City of the Future \n\n\n\nCreate a Scratch game or animation in which you describe a solution to a practical problem in a sci-fi city of your own creation. You can envision how your program would benefit people in the city\, each with their own needs\, goals\, and dreams. Your city does not even have to be on Earth—for instance\, it could be a Lunar or Martian colony. In your final project submission and presentation\, include a clear\, concise description of your vision of the future.\n\n\nTheme 2\nHelping Our Community \n\n\n\nHow can you make the world better using computer code? Identify a need in your community and create a Scratch game or animation to describe a solution addressing that problem. For instance\, how can you raise awareness about air and water quality\, child hunger\, or another social issue? Or can you create a program to accelerate recovery in a post-pandemic world? In your final project submission and presentation\, include a concise description of how your program addresses the community need you chose. \n\n\n\nDivision-B: MIT App Inventor (Grades 6-12)\n\n\n\nTheme 1\n City of the Future \n\n\n\nCreate a Android APP in which you describe a solution to a practical problem in a sci-fi city of your own creation. You can envision how your program would benefit people in the city\, each with their own needs\, goals\, and dreams. Your city does not even have to be on Earth—for instance\, it could be a Lunar or Martian colony. In your final project submission and presentation\, include a clear\, concise description of your vision of the future.\n\n\nTheme 2\nImproving Academics\n\n\n\nWhere can teachers introduce coding into the classroom? Anywhere! Coding fits well in many academic subjects. For example\, a foreign language department could ask students to build apps to translate between languages\, a science department could ask students to build apps to recognize different types of plants\, a social studies department could ask students to build apps to guide users through historical landmarks of their city. In your final project submission and presentation\, include a clear\, concise description of how your app will help improving the classroom learning.\n\n\nTheme 3\nCommunity Computational Action  \n\n\n\nHow can you make the world better using computer code? Identify a need in your community and create a Android APP to address that problem. For instance\, how can you raise awareness about air and water quality\, child hunger\, or another social issue? Or can you create a program to accelerate recovery in a post-pandemic world? In your final project submission and presentation\, include a concise description of how your program addresses the community need you chose. \n\n\n\n\nWorkshops\nTwo FREE workshops are open to the public to give additional information of the competition as well as training for the tools. \nWorkshop 1: Introducing coding in Scratch and competition rules\nWhen: Mar 5\, 2021 02:00 PM-03:00PM Central Time (US and Canada) \nEvent recording YouTube playlist \nhttp://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLB2OCDHrmxsI9-q4N109lFC8spP5mwO_k \n  \nWorkshop 2: In depth training in MIT APP Inventor\, Scratch and competition \nWhen: Mar 26\, 2021 02:00 PM-04:00PM Central Time (US and Canada) \nEvent recording YouTube playlist \nhttp://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLB2OCDHrmxsJR0k1muhX0MytRtkL__uEv \n  \nAwards\n\nCash awards will be given to the first three places and special award winners per division. \nTrophy: The winners of each division will also receive a trophy at the event award ceremony\, presented by the corporate sponsors.\nRecognition: Award recipients will be recognized on both websites and in the eNewsletters of the CIE/USA-DFW\, local news media and social media\, and a showcase at CIE/USA-DFW Annual Convention in August 2022.\n\nTop 40% contestants will receive Honorable Mention awards and medals.\nAll contestants will receive E-certificates for participation.\nThe number of winners is subject to change based on number of contestants. \nRegistration fees\n\nSECC workshops: FREE\nSECC Competition: $10 per team or FREE registration for the SECC Competition teams with parents who are CIE members members.\n\nBoth individual and team registrations are accepted. Students\, with guidance from their teachers and mentors\, build innovative robots and compete year-round in a variety of matches. In addition to learning valuable engineering skills\, students gain life skills such as teamwork\, perseverance\, communication\, collaboration\, project management\, and critical thinking. The VEX Robotics Competition prepares students to become future innovators with 95% of participants reporting an increased interest in STEM subject areas and pursuing STEM-related careers. \nThis year\, teams will be competing in the Nothing But Net Challenge.  Nothing But Net is played on a 12 foot by 12 foot field by two alliances: one red and one blue.  An alliance consists of two randomly paired teams during qualifying rounds or selected teams during the elimination round.  The objective of the game is to score more points than your opposing alliance by making baskets of normal balls in low (1 point) or high (5 points).  In addition to normal balls\, teams have the ability to pick up bonus balls that are worth twice as many points\, 2 and 10 respectively\, for low and high goals.  At the end of the match\, teams also can score additional points by lifting their alliance member’s robot off the ground using their own robot!  For a low elevated robot (one 4 inches of the ground)\, teams will get an additional 25 points.  But if they are able to raise their team member’s robot 12 inches off the ground\, they will score an additional 50 points.  The below diagram shows the layout of the field\, with the red and blue squares signifying the starting points for the robots: \n \nThe tournament hosted by CIE/USA-DFW is one of many local tournaments in the metroplex.  These tournaments are held year-round at the regional\, state\, and national levels.  Local champions go on to compete against the best teams in the world at the VEX Robotics World Championship each April! \nImportant Level of Competition Dates:\n\nDallas Regional Tournament: 16 teams minimum required in attendance.  .\nNorth Texas Regional Championship: February 27th\, 2016 at Greenville High School (Qualifies teams for worlds)\nWorld Championship: April 20th through April 23rd in Louisville\, Kentucky.  The world championship will feature 1\,000 teams from cities all over the world!\n\nEvent Schedule\n\n\n\n7:30 AM\nOpen doors to teams / begin check-in/inspection\n\n\n8:00 AM\nOpen Programming/Skills Challenge\n\n\n9:00 AM\nClose Out the check-in / registration process with all teams in house\n\n\n9:30 AM\nClose robot inspections\n\n\n10:00 AM\nClose Programming/Skills Challenge\n\n\n10:00 AM\nOpening Ceremonies\n\n\n10:15 AM\nQualification Rounds\n\n\n12:15 PM\nLUNCH/SKILLS (visit our concession stand)\n\n\n1:00 PM\nContinue Qualification Rounds\n\n\n3:00 PM\nFinish Qualification Rounds\n\n\n3:00 PM\nAlliance Selections\n\n\n3:30 PM\nElimination Round\n\n\n4:30 PM\nComplete Elimination Rounds\n\n\n5:00 PM\nAwards Ceremony\n\n\n\n2015 Photos\n\nAwards are given out to teams striving four categories: excellence\, tournament champions\, sportsmanship\, Judges award\, and design.
