SUMMARY:2023 CIE Mentoring Circle
DESCRIPTION:2023 CIE Mentoring Circle\n***Now accepting applications. Register HERE!***\n(Deadline : May 15\, 2023)\n“Man is the only animal that can learn from history and from the experiences of others. Mentoring groups are one of the most efficient and highest forms of this learning and developing\,” says Mark Carpenter\, Sr. Vice President of Transmission and Distribution Operations at Oncor\, one of the architects and driving forces of CIE’s mentoring circle program. “CIE’s mentoring circle focuses on talent development\, the most important element in any organization\,” states Claire Jung\, Engineering Director in Analog Power Products at Texas Instruments. With the support of the CIE leaders including our founder-Dr. Faa-Ching Wang\, the mentoring circle started many years ago. \nMany agree with them\, as dozens of volunteers join this annual program every year\, aiming to learn from experienced community leaders. They meet in small groups\, discuss topics about the workplace or in everyday life\, and practice their leadership skills. Each group is led by one or two mentors\, follows a self-paced curriculum\, and meets online for two to three hours every two months. \nProgram mentees eagerly praise the benefits of this mentoring circle. “This is one thing that saves you time in the long run\,” says Will Jordan\, a supervisor at Oncor. “By hanging out with excellent people in CIE\, I could be a better person and a better leader myself!” says Minkai Wu\, a manager at Capital One. “I highly recommend this program to anyone who wants to become a better leader\,” says Yanping Chen\, Vice President as Quantitative Strategist at Goldman Sachs. “In the CIE mentoring groups\, all who participate—including the group leaders—grow and develop by learning from the perspectives and experiences of others. I urge you to take this opportunity and to later lead others in similar endeavors\,” says Mr. Carpenter. “You’ll be glad you did.”

This STEM event supports the National Discover-E Engineers Week. The SECC consists of a series of programs: two free hands-on workshops and a competition. For the past four years\, SECC has attracted huge interests from DFW 1st to 12th grade students. We are excited to announce the new theme and updated technologies this year. Hundreds of students have improved their coding and presentation skills from this event\, and you can too! Please note the important dates:\n\n\nEligibility\nStudents currently enrolled in grades 1 to 12 in fall 2021 are eligible to participate. \n\nCompetitions \nDivision-A: Code in Scratch (Grades 1-5)\n\n\n\nTheme 1\n City of the Future \n\n\n\nCreate a Scratch game or animation in which you describe a solution to a practical problem in a sci-fi city of your own creation. You can envision how your program would benefit people in the city\, each with their own needs\, goals\, and dreams. Your city does not even have to be on Earth—for instance\, it could be a Lunar or Martian colony. In your final project submission and presentation\, include a clear\, concise description of your vision of the future.\n\n\nTheme 2\nHelping Our Community \n\n\n\nHow can you make the world better using computer code? Identify a need in your community and create a Scratch game or animation to describe a solution addressing that problem. For instance\, how can you raise awareness about air and water quality\, child hunger\, or another social issue? Or can you create a program to accelerate recovery in a post-pandemic world? In your final project submission and presentation\, include a concise description of how your program addresses the community need you chose. \n\n\n\nDivision-B: MIT App Inventor (Grades 6-12)\n\n\n\nTheme 1\n City of the Future \n\n\n\nCreate a Android APP in which you describe a solution to a practical problem in a sci-fi city of your own creation. You can envision how your program would benefit people in the city\, each with their own needs\, goals\, and dreams. Your city does not even have to be on Earth—for instance\, it could be a Lunar or Martian colony. In your final project submission and presentation\, include a clear\, concise description of your vision of the future.\n\n\nTheme 2\nImproving Academics\n\n\n\nWhere can teachers introduce coding into the classroom? Anywhere! Coding fits well in many academic subjects. For example\, a foreign language department could ask students to build apps to translate between languages\, a science department could ask students to build apps to recognize different types of plants\, a social studies department could ask students to build apps to guide users through historical landmarks of their city. In your final project submission and presentation\, include a clear\, concise description of how your app will help improving the classroom learning.\n\n\nTheme 3\nCommunity Computational Action  \n\n\n\nHow can you make the world better using computer code? Identify a need in your community and create a Android APP to address that problem. For instance\, how can you raise awareness about air and water quality\, child hunger\, or another social issue? Or can you create a program to accelerate recovery in a post-pandemic world? In your final project submission and presentation\, include a concise description of how your program addresses the community need you chose. \n\n\n\n\nWorkshops\nTwo FREE workshops are open to the public to give additional information of the competition as well as training for the tools. \nWorkshop 1: Introducing coding in Scratch and competition rules\nWhen: Mar 5\, 2021 02:00 PM-03:00PM Central Time (US and Canada) \nEvent recording YouTube playlist \nhttp://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLB2OCDHrmxsI9-q4N109lFC8spP5mwO_k \n  \nWorkshop 2: In depth training in MIT APP Inventor\, Scratch and competition \nWhen: Mar 26\, 2021 02:00 PM-04:00PM Central Time (US and Canada) \nEvent recording YouTube playlist \nhttp://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLB2OCDHrmxsJR0k1muhX0MytRtkL__uEv \n  \nAwards\n\nCash awards will be given to the first three places and special award winners per division. \nTrophy: The winners of each division will also receive a trophy at the event award ceremony\, presented by the corporate sponsors.\nRecognition: Award recipients will be recognized on both websites and in the eNewsletters of the CIE/USA-DFW\, local news media and social media\, and a showcase at CIE/USA-DFW Annual Convention in August 2022.\n\nTop 40% contestants will receive Honorable Mention awards and medals.\nAll contestants will receive E-certificates for participation.\nThe number of winners is subject to change based on number of contestants. \nRegistration fees\n\nSECC workshops: FREE\nSECC Competition: $10 per team or FREE registration for the SECC Competition teams with parents who are CIE members members.\n\nBoth individual and team registrations are accepted. They are very informative topics about the current progress on cancer treatment and the prospect for the next 20 years; how the modern radar technology changes our life in the future; the history of networking and the future 5G revolution. \n \n \n\n\nTechnical Symposium Speaker Profiles:\n\n\n\nAlec Zhang\, Professor\, Department of Physiology\, UT Southwestern Medical Center\n\n\n\n \nSpeech Title: Cancer Immunotherapy\, a Promising New Cancer Treatment\nSpeech Abstract: Our immune system\, consisting of numerous types of immune cells\, constantly recognizes and eliminates continuously arising newly mutated cells\, preventing us from getting cancer. Nevertheless\, this immune surveillance can be overcome by cancer. The cancer can also convert immune cells in the tumor environment from being anti-tumor to tumor-supportive. Fortunately\, the most recent progression of biomedical research has enabled us to develop novel cancer immunotherapies that serve as a new generation of therapy for cancer treatment. I will introduce three types of these immunotherapies: immune checkpoint blockade (represented by the PD-1 antibody therapy)\, CAR-T cells (currently only for blood cancers)\, and personalized cancer vaccine (still in clinical trials). I will also list examples of ongoing research that looks promising for the advancement of immunotherapy and discuss future perspectives. \n\nDr. Alec Zhang\, Morton H. SUMMARY:Online: 2021 CIE Mentoring Circle
DESCRIPTION:Online: 2021 CIE Mentoring Circle\n  \n“Man is the only animal that can learn from history and from the experiences of others.
