The 2020 CIE/USA-DFW Spring Technical Symposium “AI for Real-Life Application” aims to exchange ideas, best practices and technical innovations in the field of artificial intelligence. Three executives and experts from high-tech companies and educational institutions around the Dallas area will share their real-life applications, including their innovations, technologies, and challenges they may have encountered along the way. I Want my Self-Driving Car to Work! – Testing Integrated Circuits for Mission Critical Applications
Professor Jennifer Dworak (Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at SMU)

Jennifer Lynn Dworak is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Southern Methodist University. Her research interests include manufacturing test, hardware security, and the reliability of digital circuits and systems. She is a recipient of an NSF CAREER Award and a 2012 Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award funded by Oak Ridge Associated Universities. Dr. Dworak holds PhD, MS, and BS degrees in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M University in College Station, TX, USA.

How 7-Eleven Built a Cashierless Store in Less Than a Year
Dr. Shahmeer Mirza (Tech Lead Manager at 7Next, R&D Division of 7-Eleven)

Shahmeer Mirza is a Tech Lead Manager and Machine Learning Engineer at 7Next, the R&D Division of 7-Eleven. He leads a team of machine learning, hardware, application, and systems engineers to develop applied AI products. Shahmeer was previously at PepsiCo, where he started the Applied Machine Learning practice within Snacks R&D. There, he developed next generation automation, computer vision, and machine learning solutions for Industry 4.0 applications. Shahmeer is also passionate about democratizing AI capabilities; while at PepsiCo, he created the first in a series of Data Analytics courses to upskill associates across the Snacks R&D organization. He holds a B.S. in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from Georgia Tech, and is currently finishing his M.S. in Computer Science at Georgia Tech.

Harnessing Video Games to Crowd Source AI
Professor Cory Clark (Computer Science, SMU and CTO, BALANCED Media|Technology)

Dr. Clark serves as Deputy Director of Research at SMU Guildhall, Assistant Professor of Computer Science at SMU as well as CTO of BALANCED Media | Technology. He has over 15 years of experience with a background in finding solutions to large-scale problems by combining several areas of study, such as gaming, systems biology, distributed computing, and artificial intelligence/machine learning. He has raised over $20MM in research, seed, and series funding from government and private entities as well as served as CTO of a gaming technology startup that was acquired. He has led multiple Advanced DoD R&D projects from concept to commercialization and most recently lead a team to a $2.5MM XPRIZE Grand Prize win. Dr. Clark’s innovations in human-in-the-loop machine learning techniques have led to numerous publications, patents and invitations to speak at top conferences around the world.

Immediately following the STS program, the Leadership Assessment and Mentoring Program (LAMP) event will be conducted by three executives and leaders within the Dallas area. LAMP is one of the long-standing CIE/USA-DFW events featuring “Leadership” and “Career Mentoring” for young professionals. This event is especially designed for graduating university students and young professionals who desire to enhance their knowledge and hand-on experience on hiring process, career development, corporate culture, and leadership. After the speakers have presented, a QA panel discussion will be conducted for those who may have questions.
