Mr. David Lu – VP, Network Systems, AT&T (Retired)

David served in various leadership positions at AT&T that resulted in multibillion-dollar savings over the past 35 years. Currently holds 60+ patents and frequently appears as speaker at technical and leadership seminars and conferences throughout the world. Led global organizations of more than 5,000 people at AT&T. Was responsible for the next generation SDN automation platform enabling AT&T’s network virtualization and 5G/Fiber networks. Well respected as an inspirational industry leader in hyper scale software and AI driven platforms with institutional knowledge and world leading expertise achieving best in class quality, reliability, speed, and demonstrable financial/service benefits! Work pioneered many of the world’s first innovations and promoted many distinguished industry leaders and technical talents. Awards received include CIE-USA AAEOY Engineer of the Year Award in 2017 and Executive of the Year Award in 2023, IEEE CQR Chairman’s Award, CIO 100 Award, AT&T Innovation and Patent Awards, and AT&T Corporate Leadership Award. The Annual Convention is a celebration of the services that CIE/USA-DFW delivers to the DFW community, and affirms the partnership we have with the industries, universities, government and community in which our members live and work.  We are excited to offer a new program, the Career Workshop which will allow both college students and professionals at any stage in their career to talk through a number of topics with our distinguished moderators.

Moderator : Dr. Nick Z Fang, Robert S. Gooch Endowed Professor in Civil Engineering, UT-Arlington

Dr. Nick Z Fang is the Robert S. Gooch Endowed Professor in Civil Engineering and directs the Water Engineering Research Center (WERC) at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). He actively performs research in the areas of urban hydrology, radar hydrology, large scale hydrologic modeling, radar-based flood warning systems, water resources planning and management, and disaster (hurricanes, floods, and droughts) mitigation for many federal, state, and private entities. His exciting interdisciplinary research experience has gained national and international recognition through improving the fundamental understanding of watershed resiliency by addressing two grand challenges of climate change and urbanization.

Ms. Xiaolin Lu, Fellow and Director, Texas Instruments

Xiaolin is Fellow and director of Texas Instruments Kilby Sensing, Processing, and Innovation Lab. The group covers embedded AI, generative AI for automation, in-sensor computing, smart analog interfaces, smart manufacturing with vision inspection and wireless sensors, etc. She is chartered to drive system level solutions using TI analog and embedded processors, to enable efficient and smart manufacturing inside the company.
Xiaolin has worked on various projects, including smallest edge AI HW, Compute-In-Memory engine, Smart Sensing, Wireless Sensor Network to name a few.
Xiaolin has given keynote and plenary talks at numerous technical conferences. In addition, she is the author/co-author of more than 60 U.S. issued patents and the recipient of the special recognition awards: 2021 Women Changing the Face of Dallas, 2016 Asian American Engineer of the Year, Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and National Women of Color award in the Technical Innovation.
Xiaolin is United Way Tocqueville member for community services. In her free time, Xiaolin enjoys yoga practice, playing piano, and leisure travel.

Dr. Yang Xie, Professor and Associate Dean of Data Science, UTSW

Dr. Yang Xie holds the Raymond D. and Patsy R. Nasher Distinguished Chair in Cancer Research and serves as a Professor and Associate Dean of Data Science at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She is the founding director of the Quantitative Biomedical Research Center, the Data Science for Precision Health Initiative, and the Pediatric Cancer Data Core at UT Southwestern. She has served as a regular member of the NIH Biodata Management and Analysis Study Section and is an advisor to the journal Lancet Digital Health.
With training in statistics, medicine, and epidemiology, she possesses a comprehensive understanding of developing and validating quantitative methods for precision health applications.

Dr. Jesse Zarazaga, Clinical Associate Professor, Fellow Hunt Institute, SMU

Working across the boundaries of urbanism, landscape mapping, and public engagement, Zarazaga explores ways to connect culture and community to place. Using GIS and participatory community mapping, she explores the impact of civil and environmental choices on the design of communities. Her research spans education and practice, working on the integration of community research into project-based learning. Her work overlaps areas of GIS mapping, global sustainable urbanism, design and creativity, with ongoing humanitarian engineering research projects in Tanzania, Kenya and Colombia as well as locally in Dallas. She undertook a Fulbright in Valparaíso, Chile, to investigate, and map, devices of landscape as inspirations for the orders of community space. Jessie earned her Ph.D. in Applied Science in Engineering at SMU, a BA and MA in architecture from Cambridge University, and a BA in Design from Williams College. She is a Registered Architect with the RIBA.

Forum Host: Mr. Autry Warren, Vice President, Oncor, (Retired)

After a 44-year career, Autry Warren retired as Vice President of Market Relations for Oncor. In his prior role he managed strategic business relationships and major customer programs. Also, over his career, Autry has held several key management positions in areas such as Accounting, Regulatory and Customer Service.

Autry has a distinguished record of serving the community and currently sits on the board of the African American Museum and Chinese Institute of Engineers. Other previous community roles include chairman of the Oak Cliff Chamber of Commerce, Board of the Directors – Dallas Zoological Society, the United Way of Greater Dallas African American Leadership Society Council and he is a graduate of Leadership North Texas.

Autry has a BBA in Accounting from the University of New Mexico and is a Certified Public Accountant. Prior business associations include serving as the chair of the Texas Society of CPAs Energy Committee and served on the Executive Board and Treasurer for the Working Group for Investment in Reliable Economic Electric Systems (WIRES).

Hobbies include spending time with family, traveling, golfing and grilling.

The Chinese Institute of Engineers (CIE) is excited to bring back the innovative new debate program “Point/Counterpoint”. The central theme of these debates is the Shepherding of Technology for Humanity, which we hope will spark thoughtful discussions on this critical topic. This program features a moderator and four technical professionals and skilled debaters engaging in two distinct one-on-one debates.

Moderator

Gaurav Shekhar – Senior Assistant Dean of the Graduate Programs in the Naveen Jindal School of Management, UTD

Dr. Gaurav Shekhar is the Senior Assistant Dean of the Graduate Programs in the Naveen Jindal School of Management. He is an Assistant Professor of Instruction in the Information Systems area and teaches courses like Business Intelligence, Digital Consulting, Sustainability Analytics and Robotic Process Automation to both Graduate and Undergraduates. He was inducted into ‘Dallas 500’ by the DCEO Magazine for 2024. He is a two-time TEDx speaker and was named as the 40 Under 40 by the Dallas Business Journal in 2023. He was also named as a 40 under 40 Data Leaders for the year 2022 by the CDO Magazine.

His main areas of research are IT Project Management, AI/Machine Learning, Natural Language, and Organizational Leadership. He enjoys working with students and works with them across academic and non-academic areas. He has been instrumental in setting up student and corporate engagement programs at The University of Texas at Dallas. He is one big believer in Servant Leadership which is the base of most of his initiatives. He leads the Young Entrepreneurs Program and serves on the board of the US-India Chamber of Commerce. He is also a member of the Academic Panel for PeopleCert and serves on the board of Alteryx SparkED programs and the Chinese Institute of Engineers – DFW. He is the President of the DFW Alumni Chapter for Beta Gamma Sigma, an International business honor society. He works with Fortune 500 CXOs and advises them on their strategic initiatives, especially from the point of view of Technology.

Debaters

Tony Bruton – Director T&D Services, Oncor

Mr. Bruton graduated from Texas Tech University with a Bachelors in Electrical Engineering. He has been a member of IEEE since 1997. He joined Oncor in 2000 as a substation design Engineer. He was a District Manager for Oncor’s east Texas area in the Transmission Business Unit. He also managed line the Transmission Line Design Group for several years. He set up the Program Management Organization for CREZ then managed the right of way acquisition for CREZ which included purchasing easements from 1500 land owners in three years. The ROW acquisition included assisting with transmission line routing and managing the eminent domain process. As CREZ ROW acquisition was completed he managed the line design for several hundred miles of the CREZ project.
Mr. Bruton’s current role as Director of T&D Services includes managing the computer applications that monitor and control Oncor’s Transmission and Distribution Grid. The systems include the Transmission Energy Management System and the Advanced Distribution Management System. He is also responsible for the development and managing the Transmission and Distribution Operator training program as well as Data Analytics.

Aditya Ambardar – Business unit manager for Switching power products, Diodes

Aditya is the Business unit manager for Switching power products in Diodes Incorporated. His organization is responsible for development of various semiconductor power products used in consumer, computing, and automotive industries. Aditya has 17+years of experience in semiconductor industry leading various marketing and development teams and building strong partnerships within the industry.
Aditya holds a Master’s degree in VLSI Design and a Bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Telecom.

Amy Penner – Director of Operational Excellence and Chief of Staff, PepsiCo

Amy Penner is from Wabash, Indiana and received her BS/MS in Food Engineering from Purdue University where she focused on developing small scale extruders for Nasa. Her 16-year career in the food industry has spanned across companies such as PepsiCo, Kraft Foods and Mondelez with most recently as the Director of Operational Excellence and Chief of Staff to PepsiCo’s North America R&D Vice President. She currently lives in Dallas and prior to this spent 10 years working overseas in the coffee leading different roles in R&D, Manufacturing and Procurement while working in England, Singapore and Amsterdam, Netherlands. While in England, she received her MBA from Oxford Brookes University, specializing in improving M&A success for R&D organizations, and she holds 6 patents. Outside of work, she enjoys cooking and inventing new creations, travelling and involvement with her church.

Yunfei (Leo) Song – Director of AI Governance, Fidelity

Leo is a Director of AI Governance at Fidelity Investments, where he leads cross-business unit teams for AI solution review and risk assessment for both internal built and vendor solutions. He ensures production readiness, and promotes collaboration for faster time-to-market. With over a decade of technical expertise, Leo excels in identifying business opportunities and implementing data-driven strategies for cross-functional initiatives. He is passionate about technology and mentoring young professionals.
